HOPE FOR VICTIMS

Do you consider yourself to be a victim? Years ago, I lived within that dungeon of despair. No matter what causes us to become a casualty of sin against us, know this. We don't have to live our lives within that stigma. This might sound confusing to some, but we have a choice.

Living life as a victim is our downfall—not the fact that we suffered abuse.

Being stuck in the mode of victimhood is like dragging around a ball and chain. It's oppressive. It causes depression, which adds feelings of hopelessness to the situation. And on and on. When stuck in this mode, the vicious circle keeps us from finding freedom.

What is it we truly need freedom from? Pity. Yes, pity, and perhaps shame. Shame that we allowed such and such to happen. Shame that we did nothing to stop the abuse. Perhaps you feel you are still suffering from the abuse your forefathers suffered. Please here me. Unless your personal abuse is ongoing, whatever caused your suffering, it's in the past.

In that case, why are you still stuck? Is it fear? The only way out may be up to you. Take courage, and reach out, and get the help you need. Please, don't allow others to abuse you. Take charge of your life!

Living within the stigma of victimhood is like a heavy, dark cloak of despair. But that is not what Christ intended for any of us. He paid the price so that we could be free by putting our faith in Him. He came to give us Hope. He is the Hope of the world.

Abuse also causes anger. In Ephesians 4:26, 27 it says, "Be angry do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity." Why should we get rid of our anger before going to sleep? I think you know the answer. Going to bed angry will most assuredly cause us to get up with anger lingering within our spirit. The apostle Paul knew what he was talking about.

Why give the devil an opening into our lives that would cause us to sin?

Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." His gift is free. Not only is it free, It's our choice to be free. We don't have to stay stuck in the mode of victimhood. Jesus said, "Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28 – 30, ESV)."

Cast all your burdens upon the Lord and find freedom. For the Lord never intended  you to carry such a heavy load. Our purpose in life is not to live as victims—but as victors in Christ.

Lord, break the chains of victimhood in the precious name of Jesus. You had every reason to live as a victim, yet you lived and died victorious over sin and death, that we, too, might live. Thank you Lord, for setting the captives free, in your name, we pray. Amen.
