Watching Our Words and Where We Step

How often we speak in haste. Like a raging stream we blurt out a well meaning idea without considering its full implication. We have every intent to follow through, but we haven't thought it through, and too late we realize we don't have the capacity to take action. We're in danger of drowning in our mistake.

Peter is a good example. After Judas leaves to betray Jesus, He tells His disciples a second time, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." Peter asks, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."

Aw, there it is, a well meaning statement, but one that Peter falls far short of accomplishing. In fact, he does just the opposite. He denies Jesus three times before the cock crows, just as Jesus said he would.

The beauty in this is the love Jesus has for Peter. He knows in advance that Peter will deny Him. But does He love him any less? No. He lays His life down for him!

He laid His life down for the sins of the world.

And how often we blow it. Again and again we mess up. But when Jesus shed His blood it was for all our sins; past, present, and future. Peter repented and God used him to lead His flock.

Our sins are never so great that God cannot, or will not use us to further His Kingdom. But we'd do well to heed our words--to ponder what's in our heart and seek God's heart about what it is we want to do, before we commit with our words, something we can't take back. Praying first might keep us from stepping in donkey dung. :)

John 14:12-14 - "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask anything in my name, and I will do it."

Lord, I lift up those reading this today who believe they have blown it so many times they don't believe You love them anymore, or that you can use them. Bless them with your peace, and help them trust in the truth of your Word. Your love for them is beyond measure, and you have a plan and a purpose for their life. Prosper them in Jesus name. Amen.

Love & Blessings Friends,

  1. Oh boy, I can't even count the number of times I've stepped right in the "donkey dung"! What a blessing to know that our Lord is ever patient and gentle with us, as he was with Peter.
